I Never Said I Was Destined to Be a Seamstress

What fascinated me was the challenge of turning an idea into reality, using design and craftsmanship as the bridge between imagination and execution.

Fashion became the medium through which concept and craftsmanship could coexist. From initial sketches to pattern drafting and final construction, this jacket was conceived, developed, and sewn as an exploration of storytelling through dress. The project was heavily influenced by a trip to Paris earlier that summer. Walking through the city, I found myself captivated by the effortless elegance that seemed embedded in everyday life. What struck me most was the tension between heritage and modernity: the way centuries-old traditions continued to inform contemporary style without feeling nostalgic or outdated. This observation became the inspiration of the garment.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic bouclé tailoring of Chanel and the enduring codes of Parisian couture, I sought to reinterpret classic luxury through a more playful and dramatic lens. The design begins with a traditional cropped tweed jacket silhouette; a garment synonymous with refinement, structure, and bourgeois elegance. Rather than replicating this familiar archetype, I disrupted it through proportion and material contrast. The sharply tailored bouclé body acts as an anchor, providing visual discipline and architectural structure. Emerging from this controlled foundation are exaggerated satin bell sleeves, whose dramatic volume introduces movement, softness, and surprise. The dialogue between the materials became central to the design. The textured tweed evokes permanence, tradition, and craftsmanship, while the lustrous satin reflects light and creates a sense of fluidity and movement. Together, they create a deliberate tension between restraint and extravagance. The fitted body references the precision of couture tailoring, while the oversized sleeves challenge those conventions, transforming a classic silhouette into something more expressive, contemporary and fun. The monochromatic black-and-white palette was chosen to reinforce this conversation between old and new. By removing color as a focal point, greater emphasis is placed on silhouette, texture, and form. The result is a garment that feels simultaneously timeless and unexpected—a study in contrasts: structured yet fluid, refined yet dramatic, disciplined yet rebellious.

Moving from illustration to execution required translating a visual concept into a wearable form. Every pattern piece was drafted from scratch, and every construction decision was made in service of the final silhouette. During the development process, the final garment evolved significantly from the original concept sketches. My initial design featured a double-layered flounces with substantially more volume and exaggeration. While visually striking on paper, early prototypes revealed that the additional layers overwhelmed the proportions of the jacket and competed with the structured tailoring of the bouclé body. Through the process, I realized that the strength of the design lay in the tension between restraint and drama rather than excess. By reducing the volume and eliminating the second flounce layer, I was able to create a cleaner silhouette that allowed the architectural shape of the sleeve to remain impactful without dominating the garment. The refinement also improved movement and wearability while maintaining the sense of theatricality that was central to the concept. This decision reinforced an important lesson in the design process: successful garments are not always the result of adding more, but often of knowing what to remove. The final silhouette achieves a more balanced dialogue between the disciplined structure of the tweed jacket and the expressive softness of the satin sleeves, allowing each element to enhance rather than compete with the other.

Through the process, I developed a deeper appreciation for the relationship between technical precision and creative expression, discovering that craftsmanship itself can become part of the narrative. At its core, this jacket reflects my fascination with women who occupy the space between tradition and reinvention. She understands the language of elegance, respects its history, and then makes it her own.
